Анотация
The paper is focused on a particular historical event – the Crimean War of 1853–1856 – as well as on specific source material related to it, namely French and English evidence dating from the war and the following years. It aims to show that the Bulgarians, with their customs, culture and national characteristics, are well represented in these sources, while the topic still poses a big challenge to historical research as the evidence in question remains largely unknown and unexplored in its entirety. The main research task of this study is to demonstrate how the French and the British perceived the Bulgarians after getting in touch with them during the war, what did the Bulgarians (as well as other local peoples) impress them with, how did the llies and the locals communicate with each other. The paper refers to well-known authors and titles such as Cйsar Lecat Baron De Bazancourt and Lion Guerin as well as to such of lesser popularity like Alfred Masquelez (“Journal d’un officier de zouaves…”, Paris, 1858), Camille Allard (“Souvenirs d’Orient. Les Echelles du Levant”, Paris, 1864, 2013), “Atlas historique et topographique de la Guerre d’Orient en 1854, 1855 et 1856 entrepris par ordre de S. M. l’Empereur Napolйon III” (Paris, 1858), George Duckworth, E. R. Fisher-Rowe (Late Capitain 4th Dragoon Gards during the Crimean War, 1854–1855), etc. Demonstrating the huge potential of French and English sources on the Crimean War for the study of the Bulgarian history of that time is also among the aims of the paper.
